Welcome to the first of our customer profiles, where we ask one of our many baller PI men what makes them tick. Today we're featuring Jacob Holton, an emergency medicine doctor who moonlights as Chicago's favorite style enthusiast.
I grew up in rural Michigan about a half hour west of Ann Arbor, but Chicago has been home for the last decade.
How old are you?
Describe yourself in 5 words or less.
What do you do for a living?
By the time most people read this I will be a resident physician in Emergency Medicine.
What's your biggest problem with shopping for shirts?
I have a 12 inch drop. 42 chest, 30 waist. Off-the-rack shirts that fit my chest are a sloppy mess everywhere else.
What's a typical day in your life?
A typical day for me is divided into the time I spend taking care of my kids while my wife is at work, and the time I spend at work myself. In terms of my job, I'm quite thankful that there is no typical day. I could be in the emergency department itself, or staffing the ICU, driving an EMS truck responding to calls, riding along in the aircare helicopter, or any number of other things.
What's the hardest part about your job? What's the easiest?
The hardest parts of my job are paperwork, bureaucracy, and occasionally yielding to incompetent supervisors. The easiest part of my job is treating patients that problems that are algorithmic, particularly cardiac arrests and traumas.
What do you do for fun?
There's nothing I enjoy more than my family. I love hanging out with my wife and playing with my son, who currently is a 2.5 year-old maniac. Before I had settled down I enjoyed outdoor activities: running, cycling, camping, and fishing.
Favorite city in the world (aside from home)? In 6 words or less, why?
Barcelona. Spanish wine, paella, flamenco, the Mediterranean Sea, and great architecture.
Any favorite quote(s)?
Self deprecation is the least sincere form of narcissism.
What's the craziest thing that happened to / you did in your life?
The last decade has been a cocktail of crazy. I chased a girl to Chicago whom I had just barely started dating. 2 years later I married her, convinced her to let me quit my job and incur massive debt to go to medical school, and we had 2 kids before I graduated. Of all of that, in retrospect, the craziest decision was going to medical school.
Describe your favorite shirt.
My favorite shirt is The Victorious Train. It's a baller's version of buffalo plaid with winner's dust woven into the fabric.
What's your favorite book?
Franny and Zooey by J. D. Salinger
Who would you most like to have dinner with, dead or alive?
I rarely get to eat dinner with my wife because we usually work opposite schedules, and she is the person I most admire so she is the best answer to this question. There's also a list of dead geniuses and relatives and you could pick any person off that list and I would make the most of my time.
What motivates you?
I'm very motivated to do right by my wife and kids...to protect them, provide for them, and earn their respect every day.
